Earth Day & Family Springtime Adventures |
For many of us, spring is a great time to get organized and refresh our day-to-day routines, including the time we spend with family. Canada is fortunate to have a wide variety of museums, galleries, science centres and zoos to visit that are sure to satisfy the fun quotient for the kids and ensure they learn a little something along the way.
Here are a few ideas to put some "spring" in your family's step this season:
Museums and more:
To energize the mind and get the creative juices flowing, schedule a weekend day-trip to your local art gallery/museum, science centre or zoo. From paintings, to dinosaurs, to monkeys and more, Canada's vast selection of cultural institutions offers something for everyone.
Embrace Earth Day:
On April 22nd, people across the world will be celebrating the 40th anniversary of Earth Day. Concerns about the environment are part of our everyday lives and Earth Day is a great way to start (or continue) the conversation with your kids about the importance of respecting the planet. You can join or initiate a neighbourhood cleanup; plant a tree together in the backyard; visit your local science centre to learn about the planet, or simply take a walk through your local park to breathe in the fresh air. It's that easy. For More Earth Day ideas see Today's Parent.
Get Outside and Get Active:
With the warmer weather here, it's also a great time to get outside for some healthy exercise and fun with the whole family. Try setting out on a bike ride through the park, hiking through trails, walking in the park, or a friendly game of catch in the backyard. If you'd prefer to stay inside and it's a rainy afternoon, try making up some new dance moves with your kids and bring your own dance party to life.
Spring Cleaning & Giving:
Do some spring cleaning and hold a garage sale to get out with the old and in with the new. Get your kids involved by letting them choose the toys and clothes they would like to sell. They can also contribute by making homemade signs and helping to distribute them around the neighbourhood. With the funds they raise from selling their items, encourage them to donate it to a local area charity of their choice. They can also consider donating any unsold merchandise to charity, too, teaching them the valuable lesson of giving.
However you chose to spend time together as a family this season put a "spring" in your step and harness the positive energy that inevitably comes when the sun starts to shine.
