Halloween Safety Tips: How to keep young ghouls and goblins out of harm's way |
As families put together their scary costumes for a night of trick-or-treating, homeowners are decorating their yards for a night of haunting good fun. For homeowners and parents alike, Halloween safety should be a priority. To help reduce "bumps in the night" consider the following:
Spooky lighting - If you have a Jack-O-Lantern, use a battery powered light source or light stick in lieu of a candle to reduce any potential fire hazards.
Stay lit - Clip-on, battery-operated blinking lights or reflective tape can be easily added to costumes, and glow sticks or mini flashlights help increase a child's visibility to passing cars.
Light the way - For those left behind to answer the doorbell, help guide the young ghouls and goblins by turning on porch lights and making sure driveways and paths are well lit and clear.
Keep your haunt clear if you want to make your home scary, but don't want the blood to end up being real:
- Pick up and stow garden hoses tools and other objects in your yard or driveway.
- Fill holes in the yard and cracks in pavement.
- Trim limbs or bushes away from areas leading to your home.
- Make sure stair railings are secure and free of slippery décor.
- Use only electrical cords and decorations approved for outdoor use.
