Happy Trails - Think Safety! |
Before heading out on any cycling excursion, don't forget to CHARGE! Get your children in the habit of running through this list of basic cycling safety tips before rushing out the front door and onto the trails.
Clothes
Heading up a steep hill can really raise that body temperature quickly, but it can drop just as fast when coasting in the shade. To avoid catching a cold (or overheating) use layers of clothing with a waterproof top layer, just in case it rains.
Helmet
Wearing a helmet is not just good common sense, it's the law. There are some really cool helmets available so you can choose which style is just right for you.
Approval
Before heading out alone on a bike ride, kids should ask for approval. However, it's a great idea to bike with a friend, not to mention more fun!
Reflect
The best way to make sure others see you at all times, especially if you find yourself caught out after dusk, is to apply reflective panels to your clothes and on your bike.
Gauge
Before you head out don't forget to strap on your mileage counter to the back wheel of your bike to track how far you ride and take the Kidz Count Challenge. You should spend at least 30 minutes or more per day being physically active. The goal is to increase your activity gradually, until you are doing at least 90 minutes of physical activity. The Kidz Count Cyclometre, in specially marked Kellogg's cereals while supplies last, will make it fun to achieve your goal. Once back at home, register your mileage online at www.kidzcount.ca, part of a joint initiative by Kellogg Canada and Dairy Farmers of Canada, and tour five virtual Canadian bike trails. For every 30 km cycled, you'll be eligible to win a family cycling trip to one of three trail destinations.
Energy
Accidents and injuries happen most often when people get overtired. To help keep your energy levels up and avoid possible injury, make sure you fuel up before you head out on the trails.
