How do you score on kids' safety? Mark yourself with the Safe Kids Canada Report  - News Canada

Despite a drop in injury rates over the past 10 years, unintentional injury, such as car crashes, drowning, or threats to breathing, remains by far the leading cause of death for children ages one to 14.

Safe Kids Canada has developed this Report Card for Safety, which will help you identify and practice safe behaviours with your kids. Simply read each statement to see if there are additional actions you can take to reduce the risk of injury.

1. Bike Safety

I make sure my child wears a bike helmet correctly on every ride. Y N

2. Burn Prevention

I installed smoke detectors on every floor of my house and I check regularly to make sure they're working. Y N

I lowered the temperature of my hot water tap to 49 C (120 F). Y N

3. Child Passenger Safety

I checked to make sure that my child is using a car or booster seat that is correct for their height and weight. Y N

4. Drowning Prevention

I stay right beside my child under the age of five when he or she is in or near water, and I supervise my older children when they are swimming. Y N

5. Fall Prevention in the Home

I use wall-mounted baby gates at the top and bottom of stairs. I do not use a baby walker with wheels. Y N

6. Pedestrian Safety

I make sure my child under age nine is accompanied by an adult or responsible youth when crossing the street. Y N

7. Playground Safety

I make sure my child uses a playground with a deep, soft surface such as wood chips, sand, pea gravel or rubber. Y N

8. Poison Prevention

I keep all medications, cleaning products and other potentials poisons locked and out of reach from my child. Y N

9. Suffocation and Choking Prevention

I do not give my children under age four foods that could cause choking such as nuts, raw carrots and popcorn.Y N

I have cut blind and curtain cords and have tied them out of reach. Y N
