HypnoFertility and EFT: Gentle Solutions for Fertility

By Kathleen Milligan

If you have struggled to conceive a child, you know what a heavy toll the process can take on your spirit, your body, and your relationship. Many women find themselves devastated before turning to alternative therapies such as hypnotherapy or Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)—two gentle, hopeful therapies that are proving to have a large impact on the ability to conceive.

What is EFT and how can it help?

EFT is a relatively new practice based on the meridian points of traditional Chinese medicine—the same points used in acupuncture. EFT unblocks these energy points through gentle tapping. An EFT practitioner may tap on the client directly or teach the client how to tap on him or herself.

EFT works on the assumption that emotions have an impact on physiological conditions and so it strives to free the body of emotional blockages, which may have been caused by the stress of infertility or by other stresses. EFT can be very cathartic and clients may cry; they always feel a huge sense of relief and lightness through it. In my practice, I usually begin each session with EFT, which I find clears the way for the creative work of hypnotherapy.

What is hypnotherapy and how can it help?

A growing body of research shows that women have a greater chance of conceiving, naturally or with assisted reproductive technologies, if they also utilize hypnotherapy. Like EFT, hypnotherapy is very much about the mind-body connection. Through hypnosis, you harness the incredible power of your subconscious to help you achieve conception.

I combine EFT and hypnotherapy in my practice, so I actually have clients change chairs when we shift to hypnotherapy. The hard emotional work is accomplished through EFT; hypnotherapy is a more creative, solution-oriented process that relies mainly on relaxation and visualization techniques.

Clients sit in a big comfy chair visualizing as I guide them with my voice. They imagine a whole journey that eventually leads them to conception. By the time the session ends, clients feel less stressed; negative feelings will have disappeared and they will feel confident that their bodies are capable of conceiving.

Who should choose hypnotherapy or EFT?

If you have experienced “unexplained infertility”—in other words, there is no physical reason why you can’t conceive—hypnotherapy and/or EFT treatments could benefit you. Many hypnotherapy or EFT clients have already gone through the full range of conventional infertility treatments and have often experienced a great deal of stress and loss. You can choose hypnotherapy and/or EFT at any stage in the process.

How do I find a hypnotherapist or an EFT practitioner?

There are very few EFT practitioners in Canada working with fertility. Go with someone who has been recommended to you by a health care professional you trust. You can also check the EFT website www.emofree.com for practitioners in your area.

In Canada, there are just twelve hypnotherapists working with fertility. Because hypnotherapy is not regulated under Canadian law, it is important to choose a hypnotherapist who has been certified—the National Guild of Hypnotherapy is the most widely recognized certifying body. Most hypnotherapists will offer an initial consultation (usually 30 minutes) free of charge, which gives you the opportunity to ask questions, and to decide if you feel comfortable with him or her.

Why choose hypnotherapy and EFT?

One of the really great things about hypnotherapy and EFT is that they are so non-invasive. They are gentle and comfortable and can easily be used at home. I usually provide clients with information that allows them to tap on their own; and, like many hypnotherapists, I also give clients CDs that will guide them in visualization and relaxation techniques between sessions. Compared to complex medical procedures, they are very inexpensive—usually $120-150 per standard 90 minute session. Generally clients will aim for 4-6 sessions though they often don’t need that many!

Hypnotherapists and EFT practitioners cannot guarantee that hypnotherapy and EFT will lead to conception; they can guarantee, however, that no fertility client will leave their office feeling broken or vulnerable. Clients will always leave feeling strong, calm, and confident—which is, in the end, the ideal emotional state to be in for conceiving a child!

Here is a little hope for you...... I did have blocked tubes for almost 2 yrs before being discovered, and an extremely tilted uterus. My tubes and ovaries were literally attached to the inside wall, and was told I would never bare children without intervention. Later, I underwent a 5 hr operation to release and unblock my tubes. 9 months later I was pregnant. I carried that baby to week 18, and he was diagnosed with fluid on his brian and I had to have a theraputic abortion, which just killed me! Apon my 6 week check up, I was diagnosed with cervical cancer. I underwent laser treatment for that for 2 yrs. The outcome was horrific as I was then diagnosed with chronic anxiety and panic disorder. 2 years later I decided I would try again, and I wasn't having much luck. So 1 day, after a brief encounter with my partner, he left the room and I decided I was going to try something. So I decided to do the bicycle in bed (when trying to conceive you should not get up for 1/2 hr after intercourse) so I did my bicycle riding for 1/2, got up, had my shower and VOLIA I was pregnant, and had a beautiful girl. 2 yrs later I accidently got pregnant, but this was a tubular pregnancy and I lost my right tube. At this point I wasn't ready for another yet, I was still enjoying my daughter. 2 yrs after that (I'm 28 @ the time) I decide I'm ready, so we tried and tried I took fertility drugs and everything, nothing was working so again I tried the bicycle, it worked.... I had a beautiful little boy!!! So don't give up and try anything you can think of. A lot has to do with your frame of mind as well, I have read that if you try too hard your body releases a antibody that kills off the sperm. When trying to conceive.....1. It is best to have intercourse 5 days prior to ovalation.2. Remain laying down for 1/2 hr after (no washroom)3. Think happy thoughts and not that of conceiving4. Know when you ovulate, so if your cycle is 28 days apart, you would generally ovulate on day 14, if it is 29 days then you would ovulate on day 15 and so on. But there are kits to help you with this too, how accurate they are I don't know I used the thermometre method.I am now 39 and I think I will try for 1 more, I'm going to start with the bicycle this time!Good luckRemember god works in mysterious ways and everything happens for a reason, when it happens.Cheers

Wow that is the best conception story I think I have ever read (and trust me, over this past year I have read a LOT!). I agree emotional state has a lot to do with pregnancy (think happy thoughts, not conception). My next move, if no little munchkin brewing this month, is the bicycle. thanks for sharing.
