Keeping your Newborn Comfortable in the Summer Heat

By News Canada

For parents with newborns, summer is a great season for enjoying quality time outdoors as a family. With 'fun' being the main item on the agenda, ensure that your newborn is safe and comfortable in the warm weather. Take a look at the tips below to ensure you're well equipped for summer fun.

Ready or Not?

Upon stepping outside, your newborn seems flushed and sweaty.

Not. Don't overdress your baby during the summer months. Just like adults, newborns become irritated when dressed in layers of clothing. Try outfitting your baby in cool, breathable cotton wear and pack an extra layer in case the temperature drops.

You've packed your diaper bag, as well as a sun hat, screening umbrella and stroller canopy.

Ready. Keep newborns out of the direct sunlight and stay in the shaded areas, where possible. According to Pampers Parenting Institute pediatrician, Dr. Jocelyne Parent, avoid using sunscreen on babies under six months. If necessary, discuss with your pediatrician.

Before buckling your newborn in the car, all seat belts and car seats have been checked to ensure they've cooled off.

Ready. Family vehicles can get uncomfortably hot for your newborn's skin, especially if they've been parked in the heat all day. Be especially careful of metal parts.

The temperature is over 30°C and there's a smog warning.

Not. Summer temperatures can often reach extremes - it's best to limit your outdoor fun on these days or spend some quality time indoors. The risk of your newborn developing sunburn or heat distress becomes heightened on hot summer days.
