Oral Hygiene Tips for Children |
Good oral hygiene is important at every age – but children’s mouths need special attention to ensure healthy teeth and gums.
Once a child has teeth, they are susceptible to tooth decay. Mother's milk, formula, cow's milk and fruit juice all contain sugars that can impact dental health.
Children should see a dentist by one year of age or within six months of the first tooth coming in.
Regular check ups will:
o Indicate whether the cleaning being done at home is working
o Detect problems early and fix them
o Teach children that visiting the dentist is an important part of good dental health
Children under six should use only a small amount (e.g. a pea-sized portion) of toothpaste and be supervised during brushing to prevent swallowing of toothpaste.
Brush before bedtime to rid the mouth of bacteria and sugars that cause cavities. When children sleep, they do not produce as much saliva, which helps keep the mouth clean.
Tips for Children:
Begin cleaning children's mouths even before they have teeth. Parents should wipe all parts of the gums and any teeth which have come in. This will help get parent and child into the habit of keeping the mouth clean, and it gives baby teeth a clean place to come into.Once a child has teeth, they are susceptible to tooth decay. How to keep the whole family smiling bright!
- A good oral-health routine involves regular brushing, flossing and visits to your dentist. Regular dental checkups and professional cleanings are the best way to prevent oral health problems or to stop them before they have a chance to get worse. Brush teeth and tongue at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste to remove plaque and bacteria that cause cavities and periodontal disease (gum disease).
- Periodontitis begins with plaque, and although plaque is removed with brushing, it reforms quickly, usually within 24 hours.
- Use a toothpaste with Baking Soda to naturally and effectively whiten teeth. Arm & Hammer® Extra Whitening toothpaste uses an advanced Baking Soda formula with micro-polishers that penetrate tiny crevices to help gently clean away stains making your teeth whiter and brighter.
- Baking Soda also provides long-lasting fresh breath by neutralizing bacterial acids in the mouth that cause bad breath.
- ARM & HAMMER® Toothpaste contains low-abrasion dental grade Baking Soda that penetrates to deep- clean between the teeth and along the gum lines, places other toothpastes can’t reach.
