Scrapbook Fever |
Three compelling reasons to take up scrapbooking.
I have been an avid scrapbooker for the past 7 years and until recently I hadn’t realized the impact my hobby was having on my family. The other night while sitting around the dinner table I had one of those “it’s all worth it” moments. My three teenagers were arguing over who gets to inherit my scrapbooks when I die. It may seem morbid at first thought, but to me it was exhilarating. It showed me that my children appreciate and cherish the books I’ve lovingly created, and realize their value in years to come. To me, that was certainly an “it’s all worth it” moment! What more could a scrapbooking mom ask for? Here’s a question to ponder: Your house is burning, everyone has escaped safely and you have a few moments to grab some treasured objects on the way out, what might they be? Think about it. I’m sure you’ll agree that scrapbooks rate right up there with precious jewelry or your hard-drive. For me, and many other scrapbook-aholics, we know what goes first!
As a craft, scrapbook fever is sweeping the nation. Here are three compelling reasons to take up the hobby:
- To preserve memories and document events – There’s nothing like flipping through the pages of an organized scrapbook, laughing and telling stories of times gone by. That sure beats rummaging through an old shoe box filled with snapshots, or clicking on random numbered computer files. Some people chronologically document their life, their children’s lives, or their ancestors. Other’s prefer to highlight events, like graduations, first day of school, the chicken pox, or a baby’s’ birth. There are no rules, no right or wrong. No matter how you do it, you’ll just be glad you did!
- To give yourself a creative outlet – Even if you’re not the artistic type, everyone needs a chance to express themselves. Expressing yourself by being creative can be a healing and life-affirming process, reducing stress and anxiety. There are two “types” of scrapbooking – digital, which is all done by computer using special software, and traditional, using paper, adhesives and cutting devices. Take your pick or do a little of both. Keep it simple or get as detailed and elaborate as you wish. The choice is yours!
- To socialize and create bonds with other women – As females, we need each other; we’re genetically wired for meaningful relationships. Strong bonds of community keep women energized and healthy. Years ago, women sat around in sewing circles or quilting bees by the hour. Scrapbooking get-togethers, called crops, are today’s quilting bees. Most communities offer a multitude of opportunities for scrapbookers to hang out. Check your local community newspaper or scrapbooking store for a list of upcoming crops and classes, or create your own group and rotate homes on a weekly or monthly basis.
