You'll have a ball with this outdoor snow competition!

By Birgitta Ralston

In the Snowball Challenge, teams compete to make the biggest snowball. Use your snowball to test your skills in geometry and mathematics. This game is great for a party or school outing.

Instructions:

1. Pick a spot with plenty of snow, preferably a large, flat area. Each team makes a snowball as big as they can. Roll a small snowball along the ground, patting down the snow that gets attached. Keep rolling the snowball, adding snow until it gets too heavy to move.

2. Smooth the surface of the snowball by brushing it lightly with your gloved hands. Rub at any rough or uneven areas, and make the ball as round and as smooth as you can.

3. To name the winner, measure each snowball's circumference by holding hands and standing around it. The reach of an adult's outstretched arms is about 5 feet (1.6 m). Remember that since you do not measure the ball with accurate tools, your measurements will be approximate! To get the exact size, use a measuring tape.

Did You Know?

The world's biggest snowball was made by students at Michigan Tech in 2006, and measured 21 feet, 3 inches around.
