Cereal is a breakfast staple: the clinking sound of spoon against bowl, the crunching of Os or puffs or flakes and the slurping of slightly sweetened milk to finish it off. It’s quick and easy, and for a kid, it can be their favourite breakfast ever. A bowl of cereal can go one of two ways: it can be nutritious and satisfying, filled with fibre, fortified with good fats and vitamins, or it can be empty; nutritionally void yet full of sugar and artificial flavours and colours – certainly not the best start for any day. We’ve enlisted the help of Toronto nutritionist Dr. Joey Shulman to help us make sense of the cereal aisle so that your child’s next bowl is best – down to that last slurp of milk.
