The Best

 Quaker Life

1. Nature's Path Organic Whole Os

With an all-organic ingredient list only six items long, including brown rice flour, corn flour and pomegranate juice for natural sweetness, this crunchy staple is just as good with or without milk. “I give it an A grade for being low in sugar, very low in calories and a great source of fibre,” says Shulman.

2. Old Fashioned Quaker Oats

Oatmeal has it all: it’s high in fibre and good fat, low in sugar and sodium free, and it will keep your child alert and satisfied until lunch. Increase its fun factor by offering up creative toppings, including nuts, dried or fresh fruit. “Oats are always an excellent source of fibre,” Shulman says.

3.Multi-Grain Cheerios

Sure, they’re higher in sugar than classic Cheerios, but they’re still the better choice because they pack a healthier dose of fibre from five whole grains (corn, barley, brown rice, wheat and oats), Shulman says.

4. President's Choice Blue Menu Instant Oatmeal w/ Inulin, maple brown sugar

You’ll serve it for the extra fibre (inulin comes from the chicory root), they’ll love it for the flavour. “I usually prefer slow-cooking oats to instant, and it is a wee bit high in sugar and calories, but it does have inulin for an impressive fibre count,” Shulman says.

5. Kashi 7 Whole Grain Honey Puffed cereal

It’s got everything you want: whole grains including hard red winter wheat, barley, rye and sesame seeds, and nothing that you don’t, like artificial colours, flavours, preservatives and sweeteners. “It could be a bit lower in sugar, but overall, this is a good choice,” Shulman says.

6. President's Choice Blue Menu Multi-Grain Os with Inulin

Low in sodium and super high in fibre, this is the perfect cereal to top with fruit.

7.Quaker Life cereal, Original

There’s something about these squares that’s fun. Low in calories and fortified with folic acid, an essential B vitamin, Life is also a good source of fibre.

8. President's Choice Blue Menu Omega-3 Granola Cereal with Salba

Granola is a sneaky one – typically high in fat, calories and sugar, as this one is, it doesn’t always live up to it’s healthier than thou reputation. This one, however, stays in the good books. “Yes, the sugar is higher, which is often the case with granola,” Shulman says. “But I love the fact that the fibre is so high, and it contains loads of good fat with those Omega-3s. It would be the perfect cereal if the sugar stayed in the single digits.”

9. Nature's Path Organic Amazon Frosted Flakes

These fat-free corn flakes are gluten free, vegetarian and low in sodium. “I’d like to see the fibre count a bit higher, but it makes up for it by being low in fat and calories,” Shulman says.
120 cals | 0g fat | 2g fibre | 6g sugar

10. MultiGrain Rice Krispies

A twist on the original, this one blends high-fibre whole grains with subtle sweetness –plus each single piece is four times larger than classic Rice Krispies. “Though there could be less sugar, this is a healthy choice,” says Shulman.
