Take Part in an Online Sleep Study

Looking into the sleeping habits of infants and toddlers

Every parent has stories about trying to get their toddlers to sleep through the night. A new research project at the University of Regina will find out more about the sleeping and night-waking behaviours of toddlers between the ages of six and 23 months – and how parents manage these behaviours.

The joint research project is being led by Dr. Lynn Loutzenhiser, Assistant Professor of Psychology at the University of Regina, and John Hoffman, contributing editor to Today’s Parent magazine. Nightwaking is one of the most common concerns of parents of infants and toddlers, but much of the research designed to provide insight into how parents can manage sleep behaviours has focused on children over the age of one year identified as having “sleep problems.”

Loutzenhiser and Hoffman think that experts who advise parents need to know more about the experiences of parents who manage their children’s sleep without going to a sleep clinic for professional help. Loutzenhiser says, “We need to understand what strategies the average parents are using. We want to find out if they are trying sleep training approaches and, if so, how effective they find them to be.”

The research project is being supported by Today’s Parent magazine and website. Parents are invited to take part in an online survey about their experiences with infant and toddler’s sleep and their use of sleep training strategies. The online questionnaire is expected to take about 10 to 20 minutes.

I have a four year old who sleeps very well for the first few hours but then wakes up several times a night.
