What is diaper rash? |
The name says it all — diaper rash is a rash in the diaper area.
What causes it? Sometimes the problem stems from enzymes in stool and urine, which break down the skin’s protective oils — leading to skin irritation that’s further aggravated by moisture and rubbing. In others, a yeast called Candida albicans multiplies out of control when something (like a round of antibiotic treatment) upsets the normal balance of bacteria that live on the skin. What does it look like? Garden variety diaper rash usually causes red, raw skin. A shiny, angry-looking red area bordered by red ‘satellite’ dots signals a yeast diaper rash.
How is it treated? Frequent diaper changes and airing the baby’s bottom help clear up regular diaper rash. Gently cleanse the area with plain water (soaps and wipes rob the skin of its protective oils) and slather on a thick layer of zinc oxide cream to shield the tender skin from urine and stool. Most yeast rashes need treatment with a prescription antifungal cream.
