Will my kids need two shots of the H1N1 vaccine? |
My kids received the first half-dose of H1N1 vaccine, with adjuvant today and need to return in three weeks for the second dose. Does this first half dose give them any immunity? Or is immunity only acquired 10 days after the second half-dose shot?
They will probably start to develop immunity after the first shot, and it’s enhanced by the second shot. The first shot that children get has about half of the dose that an adult and it’s proving to be quite effective. The World Health Organization said this past week that the half dose is may be all that will be needed for children and the Health Canada is looking into that seriously. The analysis should be completed by the time children would be due for their second dose, and parents will be advised.
