Diana von Appen
Diana was born in Argentina but grew up in North York, Ontario. The turbulent political history of her family drove her to study political science at Carleton University in Ottawa. Diana's main area of interest was human rights law. Upon graduation, she took a job working in a community centre for abused Native women and children. She then began working for the provincial government as an affirmative action officer, and later, as an advisor on employment equity. This led to her position as a policy advisor to a cabinet minister. Shortly thereafter, she left government to work as an independent consultant in employment equity for the private sector.
However, after 10 years of this intense and emotionally draining work, she went on 'hiatus' to pursue volunteering, writing, and gardening. These new interests led to a certificate in horticulture from the University of Guelph, freelance writing projects, and a job as the programs manager for the Civic Garden Centre (a non-profit community gardening resource centre in North York).
These days, she works as a garden designer and consultant for small residential properties, volunteers for community gardening projects, writes, and, MOSTLY, takes care of her daughter who was born in December 1997. She's been married for 15 years and lives in downtown Toronto.
