Asparagus Tips

By Bob

I was recently at a food show and found this great info on asparagus. With the season upon us I thought those who had not tried preparing it would find this info useful. Asparagus is great raw and cooked!

Directions

Steaming

  • Put asparagus into a regular steamer or asparagus basket steamer. Bring water to a boil, cover and steam for 5-7 minutes. Asparagus should be tender but not soft.

Microwaving

  • Place in a microwave safe dish, add 2 tbsp water, cover. Cook at high for 4-6 minutes. You may have to move the spears around to make sure they are cooked evenly. Remove when tender crisp.

Boiling

  • Place in an uncovered pot with boiling water. Boil 5-7 minutes until done.

Oven-Roasting

  • Place in a shallow baking dish, drizzle 1 tbsp oil over top and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Bake at 500 for about 8 minutes. The asparagus should be tender but still firm so they don't fall apart.

Stir Frying

  • Cut as you would any veggie for stirfrying. Toss for about 5 minutes.

Freezing

  • Clean, blanch for one minute. Place the asparagus in cold water to stop the cooking. Drain well and package in freezer bags or containers. Freeze upto one year.
