Christmas Morning French Toast

Christmas Morning French Toast

By Helen

This is our traditional Christmas morning breakfast. I like this recipe because most of the work is done the night before. I cook a large peameal bacon roast overnight in the crockpot and let it rest while the french toast is cooking. It slices up nicely.

We serve this recipe with berries, either fresh or frozen with hot maple syrup (the real stuff!).

Ingredients

1 loaf french or italian bread

2 cups eggnog

1/4 cup sugar

1/4 tsp cinnamon

1/4 tsp nutmeg (I use fresh)

3 eggs

Peameal Bacon Roast or Bacon/Sausage

Fresh berries

Directions

Combine eggnog, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg. Beat eggs and add to mixture.

Slice bread on the diagonal about 2 inches thick. Lay pieces in baking dish (I use a large lasagna pan - Pampered Chef) in a single layer. Pour egg mixture over the bread, turning the bread once to coat both sides.

Cover with wrap and refrigerate overnight.

In the morning preheat oven to 350. Place pan in oven (uncovered) and bake for 15 minutes. Serve with berries, fresh or frozen and maple syrup.

If you decide to try our peameal bacon, be sure to put it in the crockpot on low before you go to bed. Turn to warm when you start cooking in the morning. A great alternative is bacon or sausage.
