Between the two types of soups does it not have to much salt???????
Mivelle | January 10, 2008 at 1:47 pm - §
Put the chicken and rice in cooked or raw??
Amanda Cameron | January 15, 2008 at 11:52 am - §
Use low sodium canned soup and dry soup mix - and dont add extra salt with the pepper - change it to dry thyme or mixed dry herbs. Also the chicken and rice are added UNCOOKED to the crockpot :)

Wow why are you using canned soup??? Do you know how much additives the canned stuff have? Buy a good cookbook and makeit from scratch it will be better than ever.
Emily | January 26, 2008 at 4:20 pm - §
Wow! Why wouldn't you use canned soup?? I have to say that slow cooker recipes are known for being very easy. Not everyone has time (or money) to just whip up a cream soup!
Sunny | February 17, 2008 at 9:08 am - §
I agree Emily, most people use their crockpot to simplify things, and because of lack of time. Making your own cream soup would definately not simplify it, thats why there is ready made soups. I'm always amazed when people talk about additives, there have been additives forever and we are all still here lol.

so if you actually read the back of a can of soup, there is so much sodium. my stepdad is trying to watch his sodium, and i really wanted to make this for him cause it sounds so good and easy. what can i add instead of the canned soup? is there even anything else?
Karen | April 10, 2008 at 6:45 pm - §
You can buy low sodium canned soupsand leave out the added salt.
Susan | April 28, 2008 at 10:19 pm - §
I tried it and thought it was simple and tasty.Karen - no one asked you to make it, so leave the negativity out of it.
Bob | April 29, 2008 at 11:20 pm - §
First off susan carly was asking for suggestions for low sodium alternatives. Secondly, you can choose low sodium products and if you're worried about addatives go w/ organic canned soup.:) Have a nice day ladies

Hi - I'm from Marlow-on-Thames in the UK - just sitting here this morning looking for a chicken and rice slow-cooker recipe -and got directed to your forum. Am going to try this tonight - have a husband and two hungry teenagers to feed! - it sounds like just what I have been looking for...I made my own chicken stock last night so think I will substitute that and see what happens! Cheers guys!

hi - this recipe is something i have been looking for. it looks great though i do have one question, when you say 5 - 6 pieces of chicken could you use just 3 pieces? i have a husband and one child, there is only 3 that i need to feed.

i'm doing a lot of reading about healthy eating, and therefore am surprised at tossing in canned (filled with additives/starches/modifiers), and dry soup mix (tons of salt, hydrogenated fats, etc>) into a kids' meal.I love my crockpot and it creates delicious flavours owing to the slow cooking over time. Please use celery, herbs, fresh lemon, dijon, or tamari to add taste to any slowcooker meal, and let's get healthier. I was expecting (in this day and age) ultra keen attention to HEALTHY eating for kids, coming from any recipe website. We must change our ways or else.thanks

Hi.. I have tried your recipe and it was great..I just changed it a bit..I know we all are looking for healthier ways to eat..I am a diabetic so I have to really keep on track..My changes were I omitted the onion soup mix and just added chopped onions and some spices(your choice) I used low sodium and low fat soup and I am not a salt person so I left that out also..I took the skin off the chicken because of fat..I let it slow cook all day on low while I was at workk It smelled heavenly when I walked through my door at night..Thank you for the recipe..

Wow, this has gotten a little ridiculous. Rather than dumping on someone for using canned soup in an effort to make a meal for their family, why not remember that we're all trying to do the best we can with what we have, and choosing something that will save us time doesn't make us bad people. I'd rather spend time with my family than at the stove making my own soup. It's not like anyone's suggesting that you go out and buy a few Big Macs and serve them at home with chocolate cake on the side - this meal is still wholesome and can be easily modified to up the nutritional value. I added green beans and some red peppers and it was great. Save the righteous anger for something that really makes a difference.

Thank you Kelly. You are right ,most of us are in a hard place right now. I dont think a little canned soup is going to kill us. lol THere are way too many other things to think about. By the way dont forget your gas masks when you go out today, the smog might get ya!

I've never used my slow cooker. For that chicken and rice recipe, is it possible to put the chicken in frozen? Also, where can I find that Jerk Chicken recipe that was on the show this morning?

Sounds great to me as I love chicken and rice. Always looking for something to make with the slow cooker and this sounds great to me.
nicole | October 25, 2008 at 12:59 pm - §
can I use minute rice or should it be the traditional type of rice. I also like to watch my families salt intake but get real people this receipe sounds fantastic.

Campbells offers a whole line of low sodium canned soups, for all you ladies worried about sodium intake. I'm going to try this tonight with my mom and little sister, it sounds delicious! :D

I found that the chicken and rice cooked a lot faster than the instructions said. I put everything in the pot around 1:30 on high so that it would be done 4 hours later and at 3:30 I had to switch it to low. It's now 4:30 and I think I may just have to switch it to keep warm. I guess the time would just depend on each individual slow cooker. I haven't used mine a whole lot yet so maybe it just doesn't take as long as some others. Smells amazing can't wait to try it!
dante | November 16, 2008 at 11:53 am - §
great receipe! The only change i made was i browned the chicken in a skillet with butter for a few minutes then put it in the slow cooker, just to give the chicken a little colour.
Asif | November 16, 2008 at 3:26 pm - §
So, the chicken goes in the slow cooker raw? Is this the same for many other chicken dishes in the slow cooker?
1MALEchef | December 17, 2008 at 1:32 pm - §
I highly recommend browning/searing chicken prior to slow cooking. Safer and adds more texture and flavor. Also, to make a creamy mushroom/celery soup base is simple (15 minutes tops) to add to the slow cooker for a healthier sodium controlled sauce. Brown rice, not processed white should also be used. Enjoy!!!!

I am suprised at all the laziness and ignorance from some of you people. Why do you all think heart disease, cancer, diabetes, hypertension etc... is in pandemic proportions? Additives, preservatives, aluminium poisoning etc... Get real and cook real. If you are using time with your family as an excuse to use pre-packaged soups and other unhealthy items, think long term value over short term value.
Bongo | December 22, 2008 at 8:55 pm - §
wow...why are people so nasty to each other over a recipe? If you want to change the recipe to your taste, go for it. There's no need to be nasty in the process.

I think this recipe sounds great. I agree, that one has to be careful with the additives in the soup mixtures but they are diluted for a lot of servings. For working parents, this sounds yummy. I use my slow cooker all the time but have never done this recipe. Those with negativity should be thiankful for this one small step, better than supper at a fast food restuarant.

My Mom used to make this in an electric skillet - Chicken or Pok Chops work- Campbel's Mushroom Soup (Golden or Cream of) is mmm mmm Good. Low Sodium of course :-) It tastes great. The End
