I grew up on freezer sandwiches — I am sure my parents wouldn't have been able to pack lunches for 4 teens and a growing boy without them! Not only do freezer sandwiches save time but they make lunches more affordable.
Ingredients
- 1 loaf bread
- Sandwich filling (see below)
- Sandwich bags or containers
Freezer-friendly Sandwich Fillings
- Ham & Cheese
- Turkey & Cheese
- Tuna Salad
- Salmon Salad
- Meat & Pickle Spread
- Peanut Butter & Jam (nut-free peanut butter if going to school or public lunch area)
Directions
- Prepare sandwiches and cut in two or four pieces
- Wrap each sandwich separately using ziplock lunch bag or lunch containers.
- If using plastic wrap or bags place back in the original bread bag or a large ziplock bag to protect from freezer burn. Now is the time to mix them up if your child likes variety.
- The night before (or morning of) take sandwich out and store in freezer/lunchbag.
- Add lettuce, tomato and other toppings when the sandwich is thawed.
Freezer Tips
- Miracle Whip freezes well - mayonaisse does not
- Eggs do not freeze well
- Cream cheese on bagels will freeze but the texture changes
- Tuna and Salmon are not as smelly when you freeze them!
