Kids Artsy Xmas Cookies |
This recipe is a family tradition. December hasn't even arrived yet and the kids are already asking me when we'll bake them! It's baking and painting all at once, and tastes as good as it looks!
All you need is your favourite shortbread recipe (one is provided if you don't have one), some food colouring, 4 new fine paintbrushes, and an assortment of cookie cutters (preferrably the ones that have a pattern inside of them).
Ingredients
- 250 ml butter or margarine (1 Cup)
- 125 ml sifted icing sugar (1/2 Cup)
- 0.5 ml nutmeg (optional) (1/4 tsp)
- 1 egg yolk
- 500 ml All purpose flour (2 Cups)
Directions
Soften butter slightly. Stir in sugar, nutmeg and egg yolk with a wooden spoon. Add flour gradually, until mix is too stiff to work with spoon. Turn onto floured board and knead lightly, drawing in flour all the time until dough just beggins to crack. Roll out dough to 1/4 " and cut with cookie cutter.
Once you have rolled out your prepared shortbread dough, cut them with cookie cutters and place them on cookie sheet. Put a few drops of each food colouring in their perspective small bowls and accompanied by a paintbrush. Now have your child paint the cookies, reminding him/her not to use the same brush for different colors. You'll want to join in and make a few fancy ones for your guests as well!
Place on an ungreased cookie sheet and bake in a slow oven (325 F or 160 C) until delicately brown (about 20 min).
Voila! Your child will be so proud to leave his/her artsy cookies for Santa Xmas eve...
