Puffed Wheat Squares |
This recipe is from a kids recipe book so the kids will have fun making them before they eat them!
Ingredients
- Butter or hard margarine ~ 1/3 cup
- Corn syrup ~ 1/2 cup
- Brown sugar packed ~ 2/3 cup
- Cocoa ~ 2 TBS
- Vanilla Flavouring ~ 1 TSP
- Puffed Wheat ~ 8 cups
Directions
You will need: measuring spoons, measuring cups, a medium saucepan, a mixing spoon, a hot pad, a very large bowl, a rubber spatula and a 9x9 inch pan.
- Combine the butter or margarine, syrup, brown sugar, cocoa and vanilla flavouring in the saucepan. Stir continually on medium heat until it starts to boil with bubbles all over the surface. Remove the saucepan to the hot pad.
- Measure the puffed wheat into the bowl. Pour the hot chocolate mixture over the top. Use the rubber spatula to scrape the saucepan. Stir well until all of the puffed wheat is coated. Grease the pan. Turn the coated puffed wheat into the pan. Press down using the dampened spatula. Chill for about 2 hours so it will cut cleanly. Cuts into 16 or 25 squares.

Canadian Parents.com.... then why is the recipe in standard units? I have young adults in my home and I know they are using metric in their cooking. At least print both units of measure.

Chill Phyllis, your kids are smart enough to do the math themselves. Or learn to cook like everyone else -- in English.

I had no problem with the recipe...we use cup, tsp and tbsp in Canada and I am Canadian! LOL...I tried this recipe and it was easy. Three of us ate 3 batches in less than 24 hours! I made it again with double the cocoa and it was to die for!!! If anyone who likes chocolate wants to try this, I would use 4 tablespoons of the Cocoa and it will be your new family favourite. :)

This recipe was a bummer. The squares didn't hold together at all. Don't bother with it.

When boiling the hot chocolate mixture would you boil it to a solf ball stage about 234 F? I like my puffed wheat to stay together. I tend to under boil it over over boil it, so I bought a candy thermometer so I could be more accurate, but I'm not sure of the temperture.
