Slow Cooker Mashed Potatoes |
|
By Helen Williams
Toss a few potatoes into your slow cooker in the morning and you'll have a pot of potatoes ready to mash when dinner is ready.
Ingredients
- 5 pounds washed (cut into chunks, optional)
- 1 cup water
- 1/2 cup butter, cut into chunks
- 1 tablespoon salt, more to taste
- 3/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1 1/3 cups milk, warmed
Directions
- Place the potatoes, water, salt, pepper and butter into a slow cooker. Toss potatoes to coat.
- Cover and cook on low for 6-8 hours.
- Remove lid, mash potatoes (in the slow cooker), add warm milk
and whip to desired consistency. Turn slow cooker to warm setting
until your main course is ready.

This is one of my favourite slow cooker recipes because it saves me boiling a big pot of water and heating up the kitchen at dinnertime. I have more than one slow cooker and often have potatoes cooking in one and a main course in the other. It means dinner really is ready at the end of the day! Because I have made this recipe several times I will share that I find cutting the potatoes first is best and I usually prepare them in advance and keep them in the fridge in cold water until the morning. I have added different seasonings and like them as per the recipe but also like when they have a little cheese, or horseradish or sour cream mixed in. I hope you enjoy them as much as we do!

Ok what's your secret to get the potatoes to actually cook because whenever I put them in the slowcooker they are hard as the hockey pucks the kids were just using and still not ready for supper . That's after being in the slowcooker on high for many hours .

I hate to say it after 13 yrs of using slowcookers, this was one dish that did not turn out. Half the potatoes were cooked and half were not.

I am trying this today. I saw another recipe for it that said just to put the potatoes in and cover completely with water and cook on high and then to later drain out the water add the milk and butter and mash. Kind of like just doing it in the pot on the stove except you can do it ahead of time and let it go all day and just mash later. I will let you know if this works.

I haven't had a problem with this recipe. I've made it many times and it always turns out. Maybe it's thetype of potatoes you use?

I've made these potatoes many times as well, but I always cover them completely with liquid. I also add a little chicken broth to the water. At then end of the day I drain the water and mash them just like they were cooker on the stove.
