We typically use a packaged hot chocolate or cocoa but I was game for trying this as the kids love a hot cup after a day at the hockey rink! We followed the recipe to the letter except for the cooking time- we were going to be longer than 2 hours. The extended time didn't seem to make a difference. We tested it a second time with a programmable slow cooker (All-Clad 6.5 qt Electric Slow Cooker) and found no difference when left longer even with this model switching to warm. The one change we made the second time around was to substitute the whipping cream with low fat evaporated milk and the whipped cream with cool whip (trying to reduce the calorie count a little!) and found the recipes still tasted delicious. We will still use the powder for convenience but will use this recipe from time to time, especially if we are inviting friends back - this is definitely the kind of recipe that will impress!

Cool Whip is edible petroleum, probably not the best choice if you're looking for a healthier option. Maybe just a little whip cream or none at all.
