The Pumpkin Cheeseburger |
This sassy squash sandwich will put jack-o'-lanterns to shame. It's the perfect Halloween food craft for kids.
Ingredients
- 1 slice white cheddar
- 1 small gourd or squash
- 1 tablespoon canola oil
- 1 burger patty (homemade or store bought)
- 2 Boston lettuce leaves
- 2 slices tomato
- 2 dabs mustard
Instruments:
Apple corer, chef’s knife, cast iron skillet, spatula, 2 googly eyes, red edible marker
Directions
1. Using the template provided with this recipe and the bread-carving
technique, cut out the shape required for the tongue from the cheese.
2. Using the apple corer, stamp out two circles from the remaining cheese.
3. Carefully slice gourd in half lengthwise using chef’s knife. Scoop out and reserve seeds.
4. Add 1 tablespoon canola oil to a cast iron skillet over medium heat. Place burger patty in hot oil and cook on both sides for 5–7 minutes. Set aside.
5. Place lettuce leaves on the bottom half of the gourd.
6. Layer tomato slices and burger patty on top of the lettuce.
7. Top sandwich with the other half of the gourd. Place some reserved seeds on top.
8. Dab mustard on each cheddar cheese circle and affix them to the
top gourd half as eyes. Place the googly eyes on top of the cheddar
circles. The moisture from the cheese will keep them in place.
9. Using the red edible marker, draw one line down the center of the
tongue.
10. Insert base end of tongue in between the burger patty and top half of the gourd.
